Clelland and John-Henry Orr

The M. Orr & Sons partners are Clelland, David, Harry and Duncan Orr, with three generations of the family currently working on the farms. As well as potatoes, they also grow winter wheat for feed and distilling, spring barley for malting, winter barley for feed and various fodder crops. They also produce prime lamb and beef with their fattening enterprises. Their farms are mainly livestock, with a large suckler cow herd, a small herd of pedigree Simmental cattle and a flock of breeding sheep. Cattle from the suckler herd are exhibited regularly at Haddington and Dalkeith agricultural shows, most recently by Harry and his grandson Grant, to great acclaim.Clelland and his son John-Henry have been involved with the Dalkeith show for over 20 years, as Conveners of the Commercial Cattle and Prime Lamb sections. The farms are involv ed with The Rural Stewardship Scheme, which has seen the construction of several ponds and wetland areas and several hectares of wild bird cover. New hedging has been planted and grass margins have been sown around the fields, helping to encourage an increasingly diverse range of insects, birds and other wildlife onto the farms.
